What care partners need
Caring for someone with dementia is more than a full time job. The amount of time you need to devote to not only their care, but to finding appropriate resources, is enormous. The stress on care partners can be overwhelming.
If you know someone caring for someone with dementia, do not wait to be asked for help. Just show up with a meal, offer to sit with their loved one while they run to the store, go pick up things from the store for them, CALL THEM, they are lonely.
There is no central location for information on ALL dementias. A family is given a diagnosis, told to get their affairs in order, perhaps given a prescription for symptoms, and an appointment for follow up in 6 months-1 year.
I affectionately call this time period the "hair on fire" stage. You are scrambling trying to find whatever information you can on a disease you never heard of before, frontotemporal degeneration.
